Swimsuit or swim shorts & shirt. It does get chilly so a thermal short sleeve shirt is helpful for warmth and to prevent chafing. Water shoes or sandals if desired. Bring a towel - the facility is not open when this class is run. You will have access to the locker rooms to change and shower.
PFD, helmet, spray skirt, paddle, or boat? Don't bring it the first day of class; leave it at home and let us know what you own.
If you haven't bought any gear - WAIT! Talk to us, start the class, try our stuff out first and see all there is to offer. There is PLENTY on the used market we recommend for starting paddlers.
We offer moving water and whitewater instruction as a follow on to this class (additional costs apply). Come join us on a whitewater or sea kayak trip after the class. Moving water classes are on the Huron River in April. The beginner / student whitewater trip is the last weekend in April at Slippery Rock Creek in Portersville, PA. South Bass Island Kayak Rendezvous is the first full weekend (sea kayaking) trip in June.
Starting in January, Toledo River Gang in conjunction
with the Fort Meigs YMCA offer a ten-week introduction
to kayaking class. The course includes basic paddling,
safety, explanation of boat types, paddle strokes, gear,
and even learn how to roll a kayak. We cover all types
of paddling - whitewater, sea/touring, & recreational so we can focus instruction to student preferences. This class is for all levels of skill, but we do recommend being at least at a moderate physical fitness level to participate.
All gear is provided for students for the class sessions. You do NOT need to be a YMCA member to attend this class but there is a member discount price. A minimum age of 14 years old is recommended but will consider exceptions - please ask.
Register in December through the Fort Meigs YMCA.
