Check out our Facebook Group: Toledo River Gang Paddling Club for up-to-the-minute posted events and other paddling activity.
Tuesday and/or Wednesday nights from June to August, Toledo River Gang members meet to practice and socialize. We meet at Turkey Foot or Roche Boeuf rapids on the Maumee River or at the private pond of one of our members.
These sessions provide a good setting to meet and greet other TRG members, try out different types of boats, and practice your roll.
Although summers in Northwest Ohio tend to be warm, be sure to bring a variety of non-cotton clothing to layer if necessary. PFDs (life vests) should be worn at all times.
Learn to Roll
We all learn differently. The first step is to get comfortable in your boat, with safety being our number one priority. Number two priority: having fun!
We encourage newbies to join us at a pond or pool session: get to know kayaking, paddle strokes, and safety maneuvers.
We encourage newbies to then take the class offered at the YMCA. When the pool sessions conclude, moving water lessons begin outside as we explore local rivers including the Huron, Maumee, Vermillion, and Sandusky.
These moving water classes are designed to prepare you for class II-III rapids. In April, TRG makes an annual student trip to Slippery Rock Creek, PA where your new skills are tested on class II-III rapids.
January through March, Toledo River Gang certified instructors provide a class at the Fort Meigs (Perrysburg) YMCA. Classes are typically on hour and held on Sundays at 11am. This intro to whitewater course starts promptly at 11am, while the rest of the club enjoys open pool time from 9am-10:45am.
